If you’re struggling with frizzy, curly and/or an unruly wave in your hair, chemical straightening would probably help bring a lot of those problems under control. You would achieve great styling results after your permanent straightening service. My article should clear up some misgivings about chemical straightening for you, and help you to make an informed decision as to whether this is the right choice for your hair. I have been in hairdressing for more than twenty five years and chemical straightening was part of my training. It was a regular service in the salon, just as cutting and styling, coloring and perming. Due to my training and experience in this service, I am able to offer some technical truths about permanent straightening.
The reason for a particular shape of hair is the formation of the disulphide bond in the single hair strand. A strand of hair also has a helical coil which is a thin springy thread that runs continually through the entire length of the hair. The position of the disulphide bonds determines the way the helical coil pulls up when the hair dries. If the disulphide bonds are not in a straight line it will cause the helical coil to twist and turn. This will result in untamed curls, unruly waves and frizz. Drat it!
Good news! The chemical straightening crème will simply break the disulphide bonds apart and enable us to re-align them into a straight position. When we apply the neutralizer, the hydrogen in the neutralizer will re-link the bonds and keep them in the straightened position permanently. The result is gloriously straight hair! It’s as simple as that.
Straightening products on the market today are designed for color treated hair. Even if you have had hilites, foils or frosting, there is a suitable formula to accommodate to the condition of your hair. If the correct formula is used and the process is carried out by a qualified, experienced hairdresser, there is no need to worry about breakage or damage.
Chemical straightening would last around six months. The new hair that grows out after the straightening process will have the original curl that you had to start with. It is quite safe to repeat the process again.
It is not as costly as one would think. The benefit is that you would only have chemical straightening every four to six months. So it might be a little costly initially, but it does not require a monthly maintenance.
Straightened hair is so much easier to style. The hair dries quickly and takes shape with much less effort. The application of a permanent straightener can be applied to a specific part of your hair. You may only wish to relax the front area or fringe. I’ve often seen clients struggle with curly or frizzy sides, but the rest of the hair is perfectly well behaved. In this case we would only chemically relax the sides. Just imagine the advantage of better control over the texture of your hair. Once chemically straightened, your hair will not be as difficult to manage after being exposed to humidity, steam from cooking or a shower, and will not even frizz after a sprinkle of rain. The benefit is immense.
